In early March 2020, FOBL launched our annual Essay Contest just in time for the closing of all Banning schools due to CoVid-19.
Luckily, we designed the 2020 Essay Contest to run online, so FOBL was able to accept submissions, complete the judging, and award the Winners!
We asked students, grades 9-12, to respond in short essay form to Carlos Santana’s quote, “Happiness is not a destination or an experience. It's a decision.”
Banning students accepted the challenge amid a pandemic and the extended isolation of quarantine. The seven Banning High School students listed below are winners on paper and in life, and we respectfully congratulate each of them!

On Tuesday June 9th, 2020, Mayor Daniela Andrade and the Banning City Council honored Friends of Banning Library AND the seven Banning High School Winners of FOBL’s 2020 Essay Contest.

FOBL is thrilled the City of Banning honored our Essay Contest Winners. Our first effort on June 1st at an outdoor awards event was abruptly cancelled by the Riverside County-wide curfew! This generous event at Banning Council Chambers gave FOBL another opportunity to present awards to our winning essayists.

FOBL is humbled by and grateful for the honor awarded us by Mayor Andrade and Banning City Council. By recognizing our efforts to support Banning Library District’s projects and programs, the City Council encourages us to continue developing reading, writing, and thinking opportunities throughout the San Gorgonio Pass.
